Castle in Gniew - a bit of history ... Castle in Gniew is the most powerful fortress of the Teutonic Knights on the left bank of the Vistula. Built in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries was home to the Knights Commanders, and in times of Polish it served as mayors' seat. In the nineteenth century, rebuilt several times (granary, prison), eventually burned down in the Great Fire of 1921.
